A week ago during our family night, we welcomed snow in with tortilla "snowflakes" covered with powdered sugar. These were about as messy and fun as the actual snow that has arrived.
With my graduate coursework officially complete and the arrival of fresh snow, it was time to celebrate. I took our two oldest on their first snowshoe adventure on a hiking trail leading from our home to the local nature center and adjoining park (containing over 600 acres of undeveloped habitat with interspersed hiking and nordic ski trails). It's been great to live so close to this gem. We strapped on our snowshoes this morning and followed a trail we are regulars on but which looked unfamiliar to the kids in its blanket of white.
I wasn't sure how well the kids would do on snowshoes during their first time out. Once the shoes were on, they were up and away. The only time I saw them fall was when they tried breaking trail through some deep powder going up a slope. We're trying to make snow a reason to get outside and enjoy being together.
